During
these challenging times, I am reminded of a best-selling book from
1952, by Norman Vincent Peale; "The Power of Positive Thinking".
With 50 years gone by I believe we need to upgrade this approach
to something that appeals more to the managers in all of us. I propose
the new saying for the next 50 years should be to engage in "the
power of positive doing!"
After some simple internet exploration I found this quote that
states, "Research has shown that, '... people who begin consciously
to modify their inner conversations and assumptions report an almost
immediate improvement in their performance. Their energy increases
and things seem to go better.'"
Well let's do it! Let's initiate some positive affirmation statements,
let's begin thinking positive, and let's do something that will
make a difference. Then, most importantly, let's measure the performance
improvement and the impact that substantiates the claim that things
are going better!
From process improvement to project management to achieving strategic
goals, the results start with positive thinking. But, thinking may
not be enough.
So, we'll assume that you have created a clear vision and set of
positive affirming statements. Now what? No, don't start doing yet.
The act of doing tomorrow, is preceded by gaining alignment and
endorsements of your positive thoughts and plans today. This alignment
applies to your boss, your subordinates, and even your customers
and suppliers.
The translation of positive thoughts and ideas to action and measurable
output is the real proof of positive thinking. Establishing goals
and metrics and evaluating the progress and achievement to your
personal affirmations will create the momentum for reinforcement
and continued success.
Here's a hint to help guide the success. "Think" big,
but "do" through incremental steps of plan, do, check,
and act. Thank you Dr. W. Edwards Deming.
These claims of results through the power of positive thinking
found on the internet can be realized if you take the time to translate
your thinking into doing.
